DEVELOPING PROBLEM – SOLVING SKILLS: The Minister And Church Problem

Church growth teachings are incomplete without adequate enlightenment on church problems and proffering suggested solutions that will result in the upward and onward movement of the church. Like every other institution of God, the church has had her own fair share of problems. Right from her inception the church has not been immune from problems. However, it seems the situation is getting out of hand and getting to alarming proportions. Every church is dogged by one problem or another and in most cases, the progress, growth and well – being of the church is hindered. Most of the problems plaguing the churches today are unnecessary and unwarranted.

The Minister And Church Problem

There are four types of people in the church:

  1. Problem causers – 25%
  2. Problem identifier – 15%
  3. Problem propagator – 55%
  4. Problem solver 5%

There are three things we must know about church problems:

  1. You can’t stop them from coming
  2. You can’t run from them
  3. You can solve them

Church problems comes in different ways and for different reason. Therefore, we shall look at this subject from two broad headings for proper understanding – SPIRITUAL and HUMAN

A. SPIRITUAL SOURCES

These are problems associated with the founding of the church in the world. Problems from spiritual sources come mainly from activities of the devil and his cohorts (Mathew 16: 18). They come in various forms: –

  1. Persecution of believers and church
  2. Instigation of people against the church
  3. Legislation against the church
  4. Sowing seeds of discord, disunity in the church
  5. Causing unrest, misunderstanding and misrepresentation in the church
  6. Financial problems and retardation
  7. Coldness, lukewarmness and general apart and non – growth
  8. Lack of growth, progress, fruitlessness. Small and struggling

B. HUMAN RESOURCES.

This is the alarming and worrisome aspect of myriads of problems confronting the church today. There are many problems that are ascribed to the devil but caused by human foibles and failures.

1. Problems from members

  1. Murmuring and complaining
  2. Lack of true knowledge of God
  3. Hypocrisy and secret sin
  4. Scandal and rebellious
  5. Accusation and character assassination
  6. Immaturity and worldliness
  7. Resistance to change
  8. Existence of differences

These are what the Epistles addressed and tried to rectify in the first church.

  1. Differences of vision
  2. Divided loyalty
  3. Disobedience to constituted authority
  4. Improper ambition and position conscious
  5. Envy, jealousy and backsliding
  6. Rebellion and breakaway
  7. Financial impropriety and unfaithfulness
  8. Amorous and immoral dealings
  9. Hypocrisy and backsliding
  10. Pride and arrogancy of gift and talents
  11. Unspirituality and carnality
  12. False teachings
  13. Visiting ministers
  14. Pastor’s wife.

3. Ministerial problems

  1. Pride, boasting and bragging
  2. Unforgiving spirit and lack of love
  3. Carnality and lack of immaturity
  4. Too much programming

  7. Surrendering leadership to lower forces
  8. Infability and impervious to suggestion

  3. Suppression – inhibition

  5. Problem – solving – interaction

4. SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS

  1. Be positive and secure in God
  2. Check your scriptural direction and precedent
  3. Pray much and get God’s leading
  4. Be broad minded and spiritual
  5. Courage to do what is right and change
  6. Resist and bind the spirit that brings problems
  7. Be wise and informed
  8. Set up a strong prayer base
  9. Personal approach is paramount
  10. Take initiative and act matured
  11. Respect the authority and wisdom of the body of Christ.
