COMMUNITY TAKING STRATEGIES: Becoming A Community-Conscious Church

For far too long, many churches have failed to make real, tangible impact in their host communities for the sake of Christ. Like oil companies that extract wealth from a land without giving back, some churches have reaped spiritual blessings without sowing practical love. This has created a vacuum—leading to issues like community hostility, indifference, and even violence, as seen in militancy, kidnappings, and ransom demands in various places.

Becoming A Community-Conscious Church

Now is the time for the Church of Jesus Christ to rise with intentionality, direction, and divine purpose in transforming our communities. We must become community-conscious churches!

A. WHY GOD ESTABLISHED CHURCHES IN COMMUNITIES

(Scriptural References: Acts 1:8, Matthew 16:18, 1 Peter 2:9, Colossians 1:13)

Communities are the foundational building blocks of cities, nations, and even continents. A community is a group of people—beyond just one family—who live and share space, resources, and responsibilities together. God places churches in communities for several divine reasons:

  1. To be a living witness of Christ to every tribe, culture, and people group.
  2. To serve as Christ’s ambassadors and kingdom representatives in that locality.
  3. To shine as light and be salt, preserving righteousness and truth in the area.
  4. To establish and advance the Kingdom of God, displacing the dominion of darkness.
  5. To stand against demonic powers and the gates of hell operating in the area.
  6. To make it hard for sinners to go to hell from our neighborhood by raising a loud and loving witness.

God is aware of, and approves, the presence of every true local church. The local church must rise and shine (Isaiah 60:1) to push back darkness and win souls. Our cities, nations, and the world can be saved—if only we stop contributing to the problems and become part of God’s solution in our neighborhoods.

B. EIGHT WRONG MINDSETS THAT HINDER CHURCHES FROM IMPACTING THEIR COMMUNITIES

Why do some churches fail to be community-focused? It’s often because of wrong spiritual mindsets—strongholds of thinking that block Kingdom effectiveness. These are myths, lies, and religious errors that limit our impact:

  1. “We are only responsible for what happens inside the church building.”
  2. “We are not of this world, so we should have nothing to do with the world.”
  3. “We must avoid contamination by separating completely from unbelievers.”
  4. “The people in the community are the enemies—we’re fighting against them.”
  5. “They need us more than we need them.”
  6. “What happens to them isn’t our concern.”
  7. “If they don’t like how we do church, that’s their problem.”
  8. “When they suffer enough, they’ll eventually find their way to us.”

These wrong attitudes have made many churches cold, isolated, and out of touch with the heartbeat of God for their communities. As a result, the Church loses relevance and influence where she should be a lighthouse of hope.

C. TEN REASONS WHY CHURCHES FAIL TO AFFECT THEIR COMMUNITIES

Many churches today struggle to make lasting impact in their communities due to the following reasons:

  1. Ignorance – Many believe that ministry is only what happens inside the four walls of the church. Pastors are rarely trained on community engagement.
  2. Mismatched church placement – A spiritually weak or poorly prepared church in a high-level or influential community may fail to thrive or impact lives.
  3. Lack of community knowledge – If a church does not study and understand the people it’s sent to, it will struggle to reach them.
  4. Bad public image – Immorality, leadership crises, or financial scandals can ruin a church’s credibility and neutralize her influence.
  5. Wrong evangelism strategies – Methods like knocking on doors in heavily fenced estates or loud outdoor crusades in quiet zones may repel rather than attract.
  6. Poor relational skills – When church leaders and members are hostile, quarrelsome, or aloof, they push people away instead of drawing them to Christ.
  7. Low visibility – Churches that are hidden or unrecognized after years of existence—no signs, no flyers, no outreach—make no lasting footprint.
  8. Compromised lifestyles – Hypocrisy among leaders and members damages the church’s witness and causes the name of the Lord to be blasphemed.
  9. Lack of community commitment – Churches that ignore the needs of their environment and do not invest in people will struggle to be relevant.
  10. Spiritual pollution or wrong foundations – Past misdeeds, unresolved church conflicts, or ungodly beginnings may hinder impact unless confessed and dealt with before God.

  4. Show practical commitment to the community through acts of love and support.
  5. Hold regular prayer walks, fasting, and intercession for the land and its people.
  6. Guard your reputation—stay away from scandals or anything that stains the name of Christ.
  7. Engage in consistent social outreach—medical missions, food drives, school support, etc.
  8. Promote peace and community unity through events, dialogues, and joint initiatives.
  9. Tailor evangelistic strategies to meet the specific needs and pains of the people.
